The Excuse in French Tarot Has a Different Job From a Trump

A tarot deck can be used for a trick-taking card game as well as other practices. In four-player French Tarot, the card called the Excuse has a special role. Treating it as a trump that automatically wins a trick is an easy beginner’s mistake.

The Fédération Française de Tarot’s official rules identify the Excuse as one of the three oudler cards. Its ordinary function differs from the numbered trumps: it lets its holder excuse themselves from following the usual play obligation, rather than winning the trick through a higher trump rank. The rules also specify how the card is retained and compensated.

Separate the trick from the end-of-hand count

When learning, use two questions. First, which card wins this trick? Second, where will the Excuse be placed for the final accounting? Combining them into “I played a special card, so I win” hides the distinction that makes the card unusual.

Practise with an open-hand demonstration before scoring a full deal. Lay out an ordinary trick, introduce the Excuse, and ask an experienced player to show both the trick winner and the compensation procedure. Keep the official rules beside the table so the demonstration does not quietly become a house rule.

The final trick needs particular attention. The normal retention rule has an exception when the Excuse is played there, and the rules address the special case of a chelem, or sweep. Do not save the card to the end on the assumption that its usual protection always applies.

Write a brief reminder on your practice sheet: “special handling; check final-trick exception.” That is more useful than memorising it as “the strongest card.” These are game rules for the stated French Tarot format; they do not describe divination meanings or every game played with a tarot deck.
