A second-hand tarot deck can be appealing because of its artwork or an edition that is no longer easy to find. Before judging the price, establish what is actually included. A neat stack and an attractive box do not prove the contents are complete.
Ask for the deck’s exact title, creator, publisher and edition. Check the publisher’s contents description where available. Artistic editions can include alternative cards, extra artwork or different booklets, so a generic card count is not enough to identify every missing item.
Compare a list with the actual cards
With the seller’s permission, arrange the cards in the edition’s stated order and compare them with its contents list. Count duplicates as well as gaps. A stack can contain the expected number of cards while including two copies of one and none of another.
For an online purchase, ask for clear photographs that show the relevant groups and any known omissions. Avoid asking the seller to publish private notes written in an accompanying journal. If completeness cannot be checked, treat it as uncertain when deciding whether the purchase suits you.
Inspect condition for your intended use
Look for bent corners, stuck cards, peeling surfaces and obvious moisture damage. A distinctive mark on one card’s back may matter if you want to shuffle without recognising individual cards. A display collector may have different priorities from someone planning regular use.
Ask about the booklet and box separately. Missing instructions may be replaceable through an authorised publisher download, but do not assume a random online scan is legitimate or matches the edition. Confirm whether replacement cards are available before counting on that solution.
Request an accurate description of repairs or alterations. Do not try to remove stains or coatings with household chemicals before learning what the material can tolerate. If a deck appears damp or mouldy, avoid treating it as an ordinary cleaning project.
Save the listing and agreed condition details with the purchase record. A used deck does not need to be flawless to be enjoyable; it needs to match the condition and completeness you knowingly chose.
